I'm such a sucker. I see the holiday break spread out before me and honestly, truly believe I'm going to have oodles of time to sit by the fire to write and dream. I thought I was going to have at least three posts between Solstice and New Year's.
But the holidays were sweet. I got my biggest wish for the season when several inches of snow fell, which was enough to open the cross-country ski areas nearby. Last year, snow was so scarce that we had to drive almost an hour for decent conditions. Such a scandal for Montana.
This year, the I broke out the skate skis for a candlelit outing on Solstice. Picture dreamy whooshing and gliding punctuated by cursing and falling. Yes, that would be me.
The woods were lovely, dark and deep, and I was defiling them with my struggles to deal with the slightly icy and uphill terrain. I flailed and sweated to keep forward momentum, only to be surprised by a sudden graceful downhill run.
The thing I love most about night skiing is that it's pure instinct. No analyzing, no calculating. You can't see every little hump or dip in the track, so you point your skis, bend your knees and go. It's so liberating, and I'm always amazed when I make it back in one piece.
Stillwater Mountain Lodge hosted a perfect Solstice evening, from the glowing luminaries along the track to the potluck party at the lodge and the bonfire outside. Kids were giggling, adults mixing and chatting, dogs angling to get inside. Winter magic. Definitely going back.
I really wish we'd gotten outside more during the holidays, but the dudes seemed intent on passing around a little cold. Nothing serious, but it really cramped my get-out-and-play style. Every day that I was ready to ski, skate or sled, it seemed like someone needed to snuggle in with tea and blankets.
After a couple of days of frustration, I decided to switch gears and get my indoor workout groove on. With a little online research, I was able to put together some 15-20 minute workouts that will carry me through the cold, dark months without using the weather or a time crunch as an excuse.
Outdoors, we scored after all. Turns out the the community college in town grooms a skate ski course only three minutes from my house. This is gonna be so perfect. I can drop off the dudes at school and go cruise for a half hour before work! And another buddy wants me to ski with her on Mondays! And did I mention the awesome sledding hill only four minutes away? Ohhh, I'm so very grateful.
But enough about me. I haven't forgotten about you. If you're still holding off on resolutions (Take the whole month to consider them, please!), I've got something amazing coming up.
Starting January 22, I'll be working with the very fine website Living Healthy Together to offer a webinar called The Fitness Wisdom Connection. I'll be there handing out permission slips to ditch your scale, have fun with micro workouts, and flip off shoulds and musts. And especially discipline.
(You'll still get great results. I love being subversive.)
The only plan to follow will be one that you'll create using your desires, superpowers and curiosity. You know you've got 'em. It will be something you can use for the rest of your life, whether you're at the top of your game or just recovering from a life tsunami.
I'm creating it especially for y'all who want to be healthy and look good naked, but just can't make the regular workout thing happen.
There are no programs, diets or fancy exercise routines. No special books, vitamin powders or affirmations. Just me, helping you step into your own power.
Now that the holidays are over, details will be on their way, pronto. Come play.
